technology, newsvine, language, silly, slang, vinespeak, seriously-still-recovering
By Walt D

"You can't talk to me that way! I don't care if you do have an RAV branch. Regardless of your Vineacity, this is not the NDC! One more CoH violation and I'm taking you to the AoD!"

Gibberish? You bet. However it is gibberish every seasoned viner can comprehend. In the course of one short year (and change), the Newsvine community has developed the beginnings of its own shorthand, terminology and slang. This is an inevitable, organic byproduct of any close-knit community communicated with itself.

Well, organic processes are slow and boring. Rather than let the random natural forces of etymology dictate our terminology, what say we take charge of our fate and start coming up with our own lingo?

Behold the Advent of Vinespeak!

Yes, here is your opportunity to immortalize yourself by inventing a Vinespeak term or phrase that will hopefully catch on....bewildering countless future generations of n00bs!

Here's a few suggestions:

Tanged (verb): To have a comment deleted by NV staff due to CoH violation or blatant liberal bias: "All I said was that we should breed mutant, scorpion-tailed hogs and drop them on Iran and my comment got Tanged!

Phaexit (noun): Any article declaring that one has "had it" with NV and is leaving for good, but especially the second, third or fourth article stating this. Hint for n00bs: these are great for votes and comments.

Jacobseeding (verb):Completely dominating all pages of NV by posting 20+ times a day: "I stayed up three days straight Jacobseeding and now I'm top of the Leaderboard!"

Ansabity (noun): Much worse than insanity... the sort of aggressive silliness that is guaranteed to sabotage and derail any serious discussion: "Please stop all this Ansabity in my column or I'll have you Tanged!"

Anyway, my brain is still decompressing from Saturday's NDC (look it up, n00bs!) so I'm sure the rest of you can come up with much better examples. Make me proud!

Phaexit is pretty magnificent.

I propose we immortalize my hero with the term Rhining - to Rhine is to bluntly, accurately and amusingly demolish another poster and his/her position in a thread, esp. in cases where the tone alone would qualify as a CoH violation if the content wasn't so spot on.

Alternately we could Cyxit, which is to quietly announce in an obscure comment thread, and purely for purposes of being curteous to those that like you, that you are leaving newsvine, and then never be seen or heard from again.

Phaexit is a wonderful suggestion - steeped in newsvinestory (newsvine-history) and originating from the departure and return and departure again and return again of viner Phaedrus72.

I would also like to add Newsvinery - it can be used when a otherwise non-newsvine related discussion gets hijacked by meta-issues. Please stop the Newsvinery - isn't there a group for that?

Flashlight Tag. When new viners post brilliant articles, but fail to tag them effectively. I have seen this many times, and granted, Newsvine live will help, but PLEASE at least hit the major tags each piece deals with. For example, an article about US jobs being lost in Hollywood due to exporting of labor to India should at least be tagged with world news, entertainment & us news. That way people that are interested in reading about the topic can find it.

I was trying to think of a term to mean an article or comment that merely complains about how your article or comment is so much more well-written than Popular Article/Comment X, but it got much less attention, votes, comments, or praise. I couldn't think of a word for it without being blatantly inflammatory, so I held my tongue. Your solution is probably better, so gripevine it is.

I hereby propose the verb "to dawk", meaning to vehemently and impatiently point out the fundamentally irrational foundations of religious faith. Dawking someone is kind of like rhining them, but it's more specific - when you Rhine them, odds are they were being a dick and they deserve to be humiliated. When you dawk them, they merely had the audacity to (perhaps innocently) profess their belief in a higher power. I think this captures it well, because to some (like me) dawking has no negative connotations; to others, it is an indefensible form of rhining.

EXAMPLE: There used to be some proponents of Intelligent Design in these forums, but Praetor dawked all of their arguments and they either converted, left or spontaneously combusted.

...I'd also consider the verb "to noam" when this happens in political discourse, since Chomsky is as eloquent, easy-to-understand and intolerant of bull@!$%# as Dawkins is, but I'm not sure if that'd catch on.

EXAMPLE: Back in the day there were a lot more contributors posting jingoistic, conservative articles - but most of their points got noamed and they've really cut back their participation, leaving only a vocal handful to carry on their thankless task.

      Noah Bradley,
I beg to differ with you, good sir. At first I thought that you may be correct, but that was yesterday. When I got back onto the Vine today, this conversation was still here! Just to test this phenomenon again, I logged out, and closed my browser. I even turned my computer off, and then back on. I logged back onto the Vine, and found this conversation with no difficulty at all! And I thought, "Wow! Such semi-permanence!"

Vinesauraus is already a type of dinosaur.

Rather obscure dinosaur, never did much. Just spent all it's time discussing the news of the day at length. Making up words...

      -Dave

may I suggest Mcgirred, dissappearing for long periods of time, then suddenly winning a NDC.
